Club hopes to unveil memorial before end of year A bronze statue of Celtic legend Jock Stein is finally to be erected outside the main stand at Celtic Park.

Proposals for the sculpture were unveiled in March when the memorial was commissioned and were designed to mark the 25th anniversary of his death on September 10, 1985.

Now work is under way on the sculpture and Celtic Football Club has submitted a planning application for the memorial, which is to be created outside the main stand in the East End of Glasgow.

The statue of the former manager will be erected at the club gates in Kerryvale Street, Parkhead.

It will join existing memorials of founder Brother Walfrid and former players Jimmy Johnstone and Tommy Burns.

A spokesman for Celtic said: “It will be a bronze statue and John McKenna of Turnberry, the artist commissioned to create the memoirial is already at work on it.

“It will be unveiled in due course, but we were very keen to have it in place during the 25th anniversary year of Jock’s death.”

The Celtic legend also managed the Scotland national team and during his career also took charge at Dunfermline, Hibernian and Leeds United.

The peak of his career was in 1967 when he became the first manager of a British side to win the European Cup when Celtic beat Inter Milan in Lisbon.

He also enjoyed a glittering domestic career, and won 10 Scottish League Championships, nine Scottish Cups one of which was with Dunfermline and six Scottish League cups. But tragically he died of a heart attack during a Scotland international against Wales in 1985.

Celtic’s agents, the Miller Partnership, submitted a planning application which will shortly go before Glasgow City Council asking for planning permission to erect the bronze statue.

The cost of the life-size memorial has not yet been revealed and no date has been set for its unveiling. But the club today described the sculpture as a “full-scale statue” which will have pride of place between the other Celtic greats and attract thousands of fans.

Ich wĂ€re fĂŒr zwei weitere Statuen (McGrory & Maley) aber mit 5 Statuen wĂŒrde es ein wenig zur Farce werden.

Sehr schönes Interwiew mit Henrik Larsson: Larsson: I have to be my own man

"It’s hard to compare, but Celtic is special to me. That’s where my heart lies. It’s the club where I made my name and became a big player. We didn’t win a Champions League at Celtic but we got to the UEFA Cup final, won quite a few titles and I was lucky to be part of a great team. It was a fantastic time for me."

    Henrik in seventh heaven

Celtic's goalscoring legend Henrik Larsson once again donned his football boots to take part in a training session at the Lennoxtown Training Centre on Friday morning.

The Swede is currently back in Scotland for the Chris Sutton Tribute Dinner this weekend, and therefore seized the chance of reuniting with former team-mates Neil Lennon, Johan Mjallby and Alan Thompson at Celtic Park.

His appearance was also a big moment for current first-teamers as Larsson appropriately wore his famous number 7 training kit for the session.

    :celt5 Charlie Tully - A Celtic Legend :celt5

    11 July 1924 - 27 July 1971

Tully was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In 1944 he was struggling to break into a very strong Belfast Celtic team and in a bid to garner better match experience was sent on loan to Cliftonville F.C.. After just 10 appearances he returned to more than make the grade at Celtic Park (Belfast). He scored the winning goal in the 1947 Irish Cup Final.

Tully signed for Celtic from Belfast Celtic on 28 June 1948. He played his debut match at Inside-left at home against Morton on 14 August in a 0-0 draw. He played a total of 319 matches for Celtic, scoring 47 goals, throughout his career, which spanned 11 years.

Charlie’s skill quickly earned him the reputation as a Celtic great after an outstanding performance against Rangers in a 3-1 victory at Celtic Park where it was reported ‘Tully dribbled about almost at will.’ ‘..The miraculous Irishman bewildered, badgered
. mesmerised Rangers..’ This catapulted Tully to the status of cult hero and the beginning of ‘Tully Mania’ when Tully cocktails were sold in pubs; Tully ties in shops and green Tully ice cream in cafes.

As well being such an accomplished club player, Tully played international football for Northern Ireland. One game is particularly well remembered. In 1952 Tully scored both goals in a 2-2 draw with England, one of which was scored from the corner flag. Tully achieved this feat again in 1953, not once but twice against Falkirk in a Scottish Cup tie at Brockville. Tully took a corner for Celtic and swung the ball directly into the net. The referee, presuming that the ball must have been placed outwith the arc, instructed Tully to retake the corner. Tully did so with the same result, swinging the ball into the net directly from the corner.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

:top1
